Typical Meetings
Sunday Services:
On Sunday we gather to sing hymns and listen to the Weekly Bible Lesson or sermon (as printed in the
current Christian Science Quarterly) and associated readings presented by two volunteer readers. Our church's founder, Mary
Baker Eddy, designated the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures to act as our pastors.
This Sunday service is similar to those given in any Christian Science church throughout the world. Sunday
School is held at the same hour for children up to the age of 20. A children's room is offered for very young children.
These meetings typically start at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday Evening Meeting:
On Wednesday evenings we gather together to listen to selections read from the Bible
and Science and Health and presented by a member who has volunteered to prepare and present them on a timely
subject. After the readings, we share testimonies of the healings and spiritual growth experienced by
those gathered together. This Wednesday evening service is similar to those given in any Christian Science church,
society, college organization or informal group. These meetings typically start at 7:30 p.m.
Location:
Our Sunday and Wednesday services will be held at the Girl Scout Council building as consistently as possible.
We will announce in advance any alternative locations. Please check this website for any late breaking location news.
Group Meetings:
We gather together occasionally to discuss the group's activity, plan for future special events and conduct an indepth
discussion on topics of special community interest or timelyness. You may find these to be of general public
interest, particularly when we are confronting a community issue that needs healing. Watch the calendar for dates and
more topic information.
Tips for Readers:
It has been requested that
there should be a few points written out that could serve as a guide for those who serve as Readers during our Sunday and
Wednesday meetings.
The best guide is
to read the Church Manual of The Mother Church, Article III, Duties of Readers of The Mother Church and of its Branch Churches.”
Some highlights and helpful
tips to support this directive:
-
Readers “must devote
a suitable portion of their time to preparation for the reading of the Sunday lesson.”
-
First Reader shall read,
as a part of the Wednesday service, selections from the Scriptures and from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
-
Read from the books,
not manuscripts or copies.
-
The title of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy shall be clearly stated.
-
According to the
Church Manual all readings should be from the Scriptures and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
-
Readers shall be members
of The Mother Church.
-
The First Reader should
be responsible for having the announcements/notices before the meeting. Spontaneous
other announcements can always be made from the group.
-
Readers should be aware
of listeners on the teleconference and include them wherever possible.
-
The order of services,
found in the Church Manual should be followed. An announcement that collections
can be put in the basket must be made each Sunday. This comes right after the
Lesson-Sermon has been read.
If anyone has additional
suggestions for our Readers, please feel free to speak up.
